About Dressed At New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week is in full swing, as thousands attend to experience fashion worldwide. How does one dress for such an event? When a person arrives at a New York Fashion Week event, it can be tough to know what type of clothes are appropriate. To answer your question and put you in the best possible headspace, here are some guidelines for dressing appropriately at New York Fashion Week events!

Step One: Dress Appropriately For The Event

If you need help determining which event you want to go to or which event your friend wants you both to go to, check out this guide that gives a complete list of all the events occurring throughout the week. After you’ve done so, go through the guide for each event with your friend to decide precisely what kind of event it is.

Step Two: Take Note of Your Dress Code

If the event’s dress code states “black tie,” then that means that a coat and tuxedo (or equivalent) are required.

If the event’s dress code only reads “tuxedo” or states nothing, then teal is a requirement. You can argue these semantics, but in the end, it doesn’t matter. You should wear a tuxedo regardless of what the event says.

If the event’s dress code says “formal,” it’s okay to wear your best black clothes. Just be sure not to overdo it. Only wear tuxes and suits some day, every day.

Here’s a complete list of all the different New York Fashion Week events, with their respective dress codes. These are not comprehensive, but they’re an excellent place to start.

Step Three: Bring Dressy Clothes

If you’re not one to do much research, give this list a quick scan and bring whatever’s appropriate for each fashion event. If you know what the dress code is for the event, then bring it accordingly. You can easily pair black slacks with a button shirt for teal events if your friend doesn’t choose the shirt and tie. However, if your friend chooses them as the official uniform of said event (such as at a Vogue party), then be sure to bring along some other items from your dresser or closet in addition to those two pieces.
